Smart Youth in Smart Cities
At Teens Uganda, young people are at the center of creating positive and lasting change within their communities. Across case study areas including Kawaala, Kasubi, Kimwanyi, Namungoona, Nankulabye, Kivulu, Bakuli, and Kiwuunya, youth actively participate in life skills training, sexual and reproductive health education, and livelihood improvement programs that strengthen their resilience and future opportunities. Through peer education initiatives, they share vital information on HIV prevention, mental health, gender rights, and personal development, making community awareness more relatable and impactful for fellow young people. Many youth also take on leadership and advocacy roles in clubs and community structures where they amplify youth voices, influence decision-making, and mobilize their peers to participate in outreach campaigns, community dialogues, and social transformation activities. Their creativity and innovation continue to drive local solutions through entrepreneurship, social initiatives, and active involvement in shaping programs that are inclusive and responsive to community needs.
Teens Uganda also empowers youth to play a meaningful role in improving the lives of elderly people within their communities. In neighborhoods such as Kawaala, Kasubi, and Bakuli, young volunteers provide companionship and emotional support to elderly persons, helping to reduce loneliness and social isolation. They assist with daily household tasks, errands, and mobility support while also sharing important health information on nutrition, hygiene, and the management of age-related health conditions. Youth further support elderly community members by helping them access healthcare services, government support programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), and other social protection opportunities. Through organizing community gatherings, cultural activities, and recreational events, young people promote dignity, inclusion, and stronger intergenerational relationships that foster social cohesion and community well-being.
In addition, Teens Uganda promotes youth-led inclusion and support for persons with disabilities across communities including Namungoona, Nankulabye, Kivulu, and Kiwuunya. Youth provide assistance with mobility, household activities, and personal care while also delivering health education on hygiene, disease prevention, therapy routines, and access to medical services. Through mentorship and skill-sharing initiatives, they empower persons with disabilities through digital literacy, vocational training, and practical life skills that encourage independence and self-confidence. Young people also advocate for equal rights, accessibility, and social inclusion by raising awareness in schools, workplaces, and public spaces. Their efforts extend to organizing inclusive sports, cultural, and recreational activities while promoting safer and more accessible living environments that enable persons with disabilities to participate fully in community life.
